Overview

Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Nepalgunj 2026

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Nepalgunj is a 10-day helicopter-assisted pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, starting and ending in Nepalgunj, Nepal. As the primary gateway to the Simikot-Hilsa corridor, Nepalgunj offers the shortest and most direct aerial access route into the western Tibetan plateau for pilgrims seeking the sacred Kailash circuit. The journey combines a mountain flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot and a helicopter transfer from Simikot to Hilsa at the Nepal-Tibet border, before entering Tibet for the Manasarovar rituals and the complete three-day Kailash Parikrama including Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres.

Divine Kailash operates this route as a fully managed group pilgrimage covering all permits, accommodation, meals, flights, guides, and health support throughout the journey. The 10-day Kailash Yatra by helicopter via Nepalgunj itinerary is tightly and deliberately planned. There are no transit days without purpose. Every day is structured around either altitude adjustment, sacred ritual, Parikrama trekking, or return logistics.

Description of Kailash Yatra by Helicopter via Nepalgunj 2026

The Kailash Yatra by helicopter from Nepalgunj moves through four distinct zones, each with its own physical and spiritual character.

Zone 1: Nepal’s western Himalayan corridor (Days 1 to 3). From Nepalgunj, the mountain flight to Simikot is the first real altitude encounter at 2,910 m. The helicopter transfer from Simikot to Hilsa follows, crossing over dramatic gorges and ridgelines that mark the Nepal-Tibet frontier. This aerial corridor, lasting under an hour in total, compresses what would be several days of difficult road travel into a fast, scenic passage.

Zone 2: Western Tibet entry via Purang (Day 3). Crossing into Tibet at Hilsa and driving to Purang (Taklakot) at 3,900 m marks the entry into the Tibetan plateau. The acclimatization rest at Purang is medically important on this route because of how quickly altitude is gained.

Zone 3: Lake Manasarovar and Darchen (Days 4 to 5). The drive from Purang to Manasarovar (4,590 m) crosses the open plateau with Mount Kailash becoming visible as the destination approaches. Sacred rituals, puja, and meditation at the lake fill Day 4. Day 5 moves to Darchen for Parikrama preparation.

Zone 4: The Kailash Parikrama (Days 6 to 8). Three full days of the sacred circumambulation, beginning at Yamadwar, ascending through Diraphuk to the North Face darshan, crossing Dolma La Pass (5,630 m) on Day 7, and completing the circuit at Zuthulphuk before returning to Purang.

The return journey through Hilsa, Simikot, and back to Nepalgunj on Day 9 closes the pilgrimage in an organized and dignified manner.

Why Choose the Kailash Yatra by Helicopter from Nepalgunj?

The Shortest Route to Tibet from Nepal

Nepalgunj is the only major airport in western Nepal with regular commercial connections and direct access to Simikot. No other starting point in Nepal gets you to the Nepal-Tibet border as quickly via the Hilsa crossing. For pilgrims whose primary goal is reaching Kailash and Manasarovar with minimum transit time, the Nepalgunj route is the most efficient option available.

10 Days Instead of 14 or More

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Nepalgunj takes 10 days compared to 14 days for the Kathmandu road route. This shorter duration does not cut any sacred element. The Parikrama remains three full days and 52 km. The time at Manasarovar remains dedicated. What is reduced is overland travel through Nepal, which on the road route takes several additional days.

Ideal for Pilgrims Already in Nepal or Flying via Kathmandu

Pilgrims who are already in Nepal, or who fly into Kathmandu and connect to Nepalgunj, can begin the Yatra without any additional overland segment. This makes the Nepalgunj-based package the natural choice for pilgrims from outside India, or for Indians who prefer flying to avoid the Lucknow-Nepalgunj road leg.

Weather-Independent vs Other Routes

The Nepalgunj-Simikot-Hilsa corridor is the most established aerial route for the Kailash Yatra. While helicopter and mountain flights remain weather-dependent, the route has been consistently operational each season for many years, with more flight frequency and better infrastructure than less-established entry points.

2026: The Tibetan Year of the Horse

2026 is the Tibetan Year of the Horse, considered one of the most auspicious years in the Tibetan calendar for completing the Kailash Parikrama. Tibetan Buddhist tradition holds that the spiritual merit of a Parikrama completed in the Year of the Horse is far greater than in ordinary years. This makes the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2026 from Nepalgunj particularly meaningful for pilgrims who have been planning this journey for years.

Altitude and Acclimatization: Stage-by-Stage Profile

The Kailash Yatra 2026 helicopter trip from Nepalgunj gains altitude faster than the Kathmandu road route. The acclimatization day in Purang is the most critical health management point of the journey.

Location Altitude Stage
Nepalgunj 165 m Starting point
Simikot 2,910 m Mountain flight arrival
Hilsa / Nara Lagna 3,740 m Helicopter, Nepal-Tibet border
Purang / Taklakot 3,900 m Tibet entry, acclimatization
Lake Manasarovar 4,590 m Sacred lake, puja
Darchen 4,670 m Kailash base camp
Diraphuk 4,900 m Parikrama Day 1, North Face
Dolma La Pass 5,630 m Highest point
Zuthulphuk 4,790 m Parikrama Day 2 overnight

Acclimatization guidelines:

  • Drink 3 to 4 litres of warm water daily from Day 2 onward
  • Never rush at altitude. Walk slowly, breathe steadily, and rest often
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and sleeping tablets throughout the journey
  • Take Diamox 250 mg as per your doctor’s prescription, starting before the altitude gain
  • Report any persistent headache, nausea, or breathlessness immediately to the team leader
  • The rest day in Purang is not optional. Pilgrims who skip rest on this day are at significantly higher risk of altitude sickness on Day 4 and beyond

Best Time for Kailash Yatra from Nepalgunj in 2026

The pilgrimage season runs from May to September when the Simikot-Hilsa corridor is open and weather conditions are stable enough for regular flights and helicopter operations.

May: Early season, fewer crowds, cooler temperatures. A good choice for pilgrims who prefer quieter conditions. Some snow may remain near Dolma La.

June: One of the most popular months. Stable weather, fully operational routes, and vibrant Tibetan landscapes. Book well in advance.

July and August: Peak season. The Shravan month and Guru Purnima make these particularly auspicious months for the Yatra. Groups fill quickly and Full Moon departures are in very high demand.

September: Clear skies, excellent visibility, and noticeably fewer pilgrims. Excellent for those who prefer a more personal and serene pilgrimage atmosphere.

Most auspicious Full Moon dates in 2026: 25 May, 23 June, 23 July, 22 August.

The day is dedicated to administrative formalities and preparation for the high-altitude journey ahead. Today marks one of the most spiritually significant moments of the journey. The drive across the vast Tibetan plateau leads to the sacred Lake Manasarovar (approx. 4,590 meters). As the lake comes into view, pilgrims often experience deep emotional and spiritual connection.

Upon arrival, time is allocated for group puja, meditation, mantra chanting, and silent reflection along the lakeshore. Weather and health conditions permitting, pilgrims may take a symbolic holy dip in the sacred waters.

After early morning prayers and sunrise darshan at the lake, the group proceeds to Darchen, the base point for the Kailash Parikrama (approx. 4,670 meters). This short drive allows pilgrims to conserve energy for the upcoming three-day trek.

The sacred Kailash Parikrama begins today. After a short drive to Yamadwar, pilgrims commence the trek toward Dirapuk. The path gradually ascends along the Lha Chu valley, offering magnificent views of Mount Kailash’s north face.

The walk is moderate in difficulty, allowing pilgrims to maintain a steady pace and absorb the spiritual atmosphere of the region.

This is the most challenging and spiritually symbolic day of the Parikrama. The trek begins early with a steep ascent toward Dolmala Pass (approx. 5,630 meters), the highest point of the journey. Crossing the pass is considered a moment of spiritual rebirth and renewal.

After reaching the summit, pilgrims descend carefully toward Zuthulpuk valley. The day requires endurance, patience, and steady breathing.

The final stretch of the Parikrama is relatively gentle and follows a river valley path. Upon completing the sacred 52-kilometer circuit, pilgrims drive back via Darchen to Purang.
