About the Adi Kailash Yatra 2026

The Adi Kailash trek is not merely a mountain journey. It is a passage through ancient Hindu mythology, living Vedic tradition, and some of the most untouched landscapes the Kumaon region has to offer.

Adi Kailash, also known as Chota Kailash, rises to an altitude of 5,945 metres (19,505 ft) above sea level in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the five sacred peaks collectively known as the Panch Kailash; a group that includes Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kinnaur Kailash, and Manimahesh Kailash. Among these, Adi Kailash holds the distinction of being the only one located entirely within Indian territory and accessible by road for a significant portion of the route.

The mountain is deeply associated with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ancient Hindu scriptures, including regional Puranas, reference Adi Kailash as a site where sages and seers performed intense tapasya (penance) drawn by the mountain’s divine energy. Local legends hold that Lord Shiva himself meditated here, and that the surrounding landscape bears the sacred imprint of the divine couple’s presence.

The Adi Kailash Yatra route passes through some of the most spiritually charged and scenically spectacular terrain in the Indian Himalayas, from the ancient town of Dharchula along the Kali River, through the high-altitude villages of Gunji and Nabi, to the serene meadows of Jolingkong (Jyolingkong) where the Adi Kailash peak reveals itself in full glory.

The journey also includes a visit to Om Parvat, a neighbouring peak famous for the natural snow formation on its face that unmistakably resembles the sacred Om symbol. For pilgrims, witnessing this phenomenon is considered one of the most profound spiritual experiences in the Himalayas.

Divine Kailash offers you the complete Adi Kailash Om Parvat circuit, covering all the major sacred sites including Parvati Kund, Gauri Kund, Parvati Tal, Bheem Ki Kheti, and Jolingkong, in a single, well-paced itinerary.

Adi Kailash Location and Geography

Adi Kailash location: The peak is situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India, close to the Lipulekh Pass and the Indo-Tibet border. It falls within the Kumaon Himalaya range and is administratively part of the Dharchula subdivision.

The Adi Kailash distance from Delhi is approximately 700 km by road via Haldwani and Pithoragarh. Most pilgrims travel overnight from Delhi to Kathgodam or Haldwani by train and then proceed by road.

The Haldwani to Adi Kailash distance by road is approximately 430–450 km, passing through Almora, Pithoragarh, Dharchula, and Gunji. The road journey itself is a scenic and spiritually enriching experience, winding through Kumaoni villages, dense forests, and dramatic river valleys.

The Adi Kailash trek distance from the base point at Gunji/Nabi village to Jolingkong and the sacred lakes is approximately 5 km on foot, with the bulk of the Adi Kailash route covered by road in a 4WD vehicle. This makes the yatra accessible even for first-time trekkers, older pilgrims, and families with children.

Itinerary

Adi Kailash Yatra Package 2026 Itinerary

Drive: 200 km | 7–8 hours Altitude: 1,585 m / 5,200 ft

Your Adi Kailash Yatra 2026 begins at Kathgodam Railway Station at 6:00 AM, where the Divine Kailash team will greet you and brief you on the days ahead. The drive to Pithoragarh winds through the scenic Kumaon hills, and en route you will visit Jageshwar Dham, one of the most important Shiva temples in northern India, a cluster of 124 ancient stone temples set amidst tall Deodar cedar forests. Jageshwar is counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas in some regional traditions and holds great spiritual significance for Shiv bhaktas.

Arrive in Pithoragarh by evening. Check into your guesthouse, have dinner, and rest. Pithoragarh, often called the “Little Kashmir of Uttarakhand,” sits in a beautiful valley and serves as the administrative and commercial hub for the entire Dharchula region.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Pithoragarh; Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Drive: 170 km | 7–8 hours Altitude (Dharchula): 915 m / 3,000 ft | Altitude (Gunji/Nabi): 3,200 m / 10,500 ft

This is one of the most dramatic drives of the entire Adi Kailash Yatra. The road from Pithoragarh drops into the Kali River gorge and follows the river upstream all the way to Dharchula, a bustling twin town straddling the border between India and Nepal. This is where your Divine Kailash team will assist you in collecting all Inner Line Permits (ILP) and restricted area documentation required to proceed further into the border zone.

From Dharchula, the road climbs steadily along the Kali River, passing through small Bhotiya tribal villages, hanging bridges, and dramatic cliff faces. You will pass Tawaghat, Pangu, Nagling, and the gradually widening high-altitude valley before arriving at Gunji or Nabi village; your base camp for the next two nights.

At this altitude (3,200 m), your body begins acclimatising. Rest well, drink plenty of warm fluids, and limit physical exertion for the evening.

Note: Road conditions in this section can be unpredictable due to landslides. Divine Kailash always plans a buffer to account for any delays.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Gunji/Nabi; Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive (one way): 25 km | 2–3 hours Altitude (Nabidhang): 4,300 m / 14,100 ft

Today you will witness one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in the entire Himalayan range, the sacred Om symbol formed naturally by snow on the face of Om Parvat. This is the Om Parvat Adi Kailash experience that draws pilgrims from across India and beyond.

Your convoy departs early from Gunji/Nabi for Nabidhang, a high-altitude meadow that offers a clear, unobstructed view of Om Parvat. The snow on the mountain’s face naturally forms the shape of the Om symbol, the primordial sound of the universe in Hindu philosophy and Vedic tradition. Seeing this is considered a divine darshan in itself, and many pilgrims feel an overwhelming sense of devotion and peace at this spot.

Your Divine Kailash guide will share the mythological and spiritual significance of Om Parvat, the connection to Lord Shiva, and the historical importance of the Lipulekh Pass nearby, once a key point on the ancient Silk Route and the traditional route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims heading into Tibet.

Return to Gunji/Nabi by afternoon. Rest and acclimatise for the more demanding Adi Kailash darshan day tomorrow.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Gunji/Nabi; Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive (one way): 20–25 km | 2–3 hours (Gunji to Kuti: 1 hour | Kuti to Jolingkong: 15 km / 1 hour) Altitude (Jolingkong): 4,420 m / 14,500 ft Trek: Jolingkong to Parvati Kund (1 km) | Parvati Kund to Gauri Kund (2 km / 1 hour)

This is the spiritual heart of your Adi Kailash Yatra. The drive from Gunji passes through Kuti village, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in this part of Uttarakhand, before arriving at Jolingkong, the sacred meadow that sits at the base of Adi Kailash.

As the towering peak of Adi Kailash comes into full view, many pilgrims describe a feeling of profound stillness and devotion. The mountain’s resemblance to the great Mount Kailash in Tibet is unmistakable, the same pyramidal form, the same aura of divine power. This is why Adi Kailash is revered as Chota Kailash (the smaller Kailash) and is considered equally blessed for those who cannot undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet.

From Jolingkong, you will trek 1 km to Parvati Kund, a sacred high-altitude lake believed to be where Goddess Parvati meditated and bathed. The lake’s pristine waters are considered purifying, and taking a dip or performing achaman here is considered deeply meritorious. You may also visit Bheem Ki Kheti, a flat, cultivated area associated in Hindu mythology with Bheem of the Mahabharata, believed to have tilled this land during the Pandavas’ years of exile.

From Parvati Kund, continue for 2 km to Gauri Kund, another sacred lake closely associated with Goddess Parvati (Gauri), the divine consort of Lord Shiva. The reflections of the surrounding peaks in the still waters of Gauri Kund on a clear morning are among the most serene and beautiful sights on the entire yatra.

Perform puja, offer prayers, and spend quiet time in the presence of Adi Kailash before returning to Gunji/Nabi by evening.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Gunji/Nabi; Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive: 180 km | 7–8 hours Altitude: 2,010 m / 6,600 ft

With your Adi Kailash darshan complete, the journey now begins its return arc through the beautiful landscapes of the Kumaon hills. The drive to Chaukori passes through Dharchula and gradually climbs into the mid-hills, where the air is warmer and the vegetation changes dramatically from the high-altitude arid landscapes back to lush forests and terraced farmland.

Chaukori is a peaceful ridgeline village famous for its panoramic views of the Panchachuli peaks, the five snow-capped summits associated in legend with the five Pandava brothers. On a clear evening, the view of the Panchachuli from Chaukori is breathtaking and a fitting way to wind down from the intensity of the sacred sites you have visited.

Check into your guesthouse, enjoy a warm dinner, and rest.

Overnight: Guesthouse in Chaukori; Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive: 230 km | 8–9 hours

The final day of your Adi Kailash tour package with Divine Kailash includes a visit to one of the most remarkable cave temples in Uttarakhand: Patal Bhuvaneshwar. Located near Gangolihat, this ancient limestone cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features stunning natural rock formations that are venerated as representations of various deities. The cave descends several metres underground and is considered one of the holiest sites in the Kumaon region, mentioned in texts like the Skanda Purana.

After visiting Patal Bhuvaneshwar, continue the drive through Berinag, Almora, and Haldwani to reach Kathgodam Railway Station by 6:30–7:30 PM, depending on road and weather conditions.

Your Adi Kailash Yatra 2026 concludes here at Kathgodam, carrying with you the blessings of Lord Shiva, the memories of sacred peaks, holy lakes, and the timeless landscapes of the Kumaon Himalaya.

Om Parvat and Adi Kailash — The Sacred Twin Experience

No Adi Kailash Yatra is complete without the Om Parvat darshan. The two sacred sites together form the spiritual core of this entire pilgrimage circuit, and Divine Kailash includes both in every standard package.

Om Parvat (also written as Aum Parvat) is located in the Vyas Valley in the Pithoragarh district of the Kumaon region. The mountain is famous across the Hindu world for the natural Om symbol formed by permanent snow deposits on its southern face. The Om symbol, the primordial sound of creation in Vedic philosophy and Sanatan Dharma, is considered to appear here not by human hand but by divine design. Pilgrims who witness this phenomenon often describe it as one of the most moving spiritual experiences of their lives.

The viewing point for Om Parvat is at Nabidhang, reachable by a short drive from Gunji. On a clear day, the Om marking is visible to the naked eye. Divine Kailash always plans the Om Parvat visit on Day 3, when acclimatisation is sufficient and weather windows are typically best.

Together, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat represent the divine masculine and feminine energies (Shiva and Shakti) in the natural landscape of the Himalayas. The Adi Kailash Om Parvat circuit is widely considered one of the most spiritually complete pilgrimage experiences available within India today.

Sacred Sites on the Adi Kailash Yatra Route

Parvati Kund (Parvati Tal)

Located near Jolingkong, Parvati Kund is a sacred high-altitude lake strongly associated with Goddess Parvati. According to local belief and regional scriptures, Goddess Parvati used to bathe in this lake and meditated here for many years in pursuit of Lord Shiva. The lake’s waters are considered holy and purifying. A dip or ritual achaman here is believed to cleanse the devotee of past sins and bestow the blessings of Maa Parvati.

Gauri Kund

Gauri Kund lies approximately 2 km beyond Parvati Kund and is equally revered. It is named after Gauri, another name for Goddess Parvati in her benevolent, fair-complexioned form. The kund sits in a serene bowl of rock and ice, reflecting the surrounding peaks on still mornings. Performing puja at Gauri Kund is considered especially auspicious for devotees seeking marital harmony and spiritual growth.

Jolingkong Meadow

Jolingkong (also written Jyolingkong) is the sacred meadow at the foot of Adi Kailash, sitting at 4,420 m. The unobstructed view of the Adi Kailash peak from this meadow is the defining moment of the entire yatra for most pilgrims. The Shiv-Parvati Temple at Jolingkong is a small but deeply revered shrine that sits directly in the shadow of the sacred peak.

Bheem Ki Kheti

Bheem Ki Kheti (“Bheem’s field”) is a flat, cultivated tract of land encountered on the approach to Jolingkong. According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas, specifically Bheem, the second of the five brothers, spent time in this region during their years of forest exile. Bheem is said to have tilled this land, and the site is held in reverence as a living connection to the great Mahabharata epic.

Jageshwar Dham

Jageshwar is an ancient temple complex in the Almora district, comprising 124 stone temples built between the 7th and 12th centuries during the Katyuri dynasty. The main deity is Vridh Jageshwar (the aged form of Lord Shiva). Jageshwar is listed as one of the Jyotirlingas in several regional traditions and is a must-visit on the Adi Kailash route. Divine Kailash includes a visit on Day 1.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar

Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a natural limestone cave temple near Gangolihat in the Pithoragarh district. The cave descends into the earth and is filled with extraordinary stalagmite and stalactite formations that are venerated as the lingams and representations of various Hindu deities. The Skanda Purana describes Patal Bhuvaneshwar as the place where Lord Shiva resides with all other gods. Divine Kailash includes this on the return Day 6.

Best Time to Visit Adi Kailash

The best time to visit Adi Kailash is from May to June and September to October. Here is a month-wise breakdown to help you plan:

May and June are the most popular months. The winter snow has cleared from the roads by early May, the Om symbol on Om Parvat is clearly visible, skies are generally clear, and temperatures at base camp are pleasant (5°C to 15°C). Divine Kailash runs the highest number of departures during this window.

July and August coincide with the Indian monsoon season. Heavy rainfall makes the roads to Dharchula and Gunji extremely prone to landslides. Most operators, including Divine Kailash, either suspend departures or run them with considerable caution during this period. Not recommended for first-time pilgrims.

September and October offer a second window of excellent weather. The monsoon has retreated, skies are clear, the landscape is lush green from the rains, and temperatures are cooler but manageable. The Om Parvat snow symbol tends to be more prominent in September and October after the summer melt has reset.

November to April — the region is typically snow-bound and inaccessible. Roads beyond Dharchula are closed, and the Adi Kailash Yatra cannot be conducted.

How to Reach Adi Kailash

How to Reach Adi Kailash By Train (Recommended)

Recommended trains from New Delhi to Kathgodam: Ranikhet Express, Bagh Express, Uttarakhand Sampark Kranti.

How to Reach Adi Kailash By Air

The nearest airport to the Adi Kailash region is Pantnagar Airport (Pantnagar), approximately 22 km from Haldwani and 27 km from Kathgodam. Pantnagar Airport currently has direct connections to Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport). If arriving by air, Divine Kailash recommends arriving one day early and staying overnight in Haldwani or Kathgodam to avoid missing the morning departure.

How to Reach Adi Kailash By Road

Delhi to Kathgodam distance by road is approximately 290 km via NH9 (Moradabad Highway), taking 6–7 hours by car. From Kathgodam, the drive continues to Pithoragarh (200 km), Dharchula (95 km further), and finally Gunji/Nabi (70 km beyond Dharchula). Divine Kailash handles all road transportation from Kathgodam onwards.

Haldwani to Adi Kailash distance: approximately 430–450 km by road, typically covered over two days as part of the yatra itinerary.

Adi Kailash Trek — Eligibility and Fitness

The Adi Kailash trek is graded Easy to Moderate, making it accessible for a wide range of pilgrims including older adults, families with children above 7 years, and first-time trekkers. However, since the journey reaches altitudes of over 4,400 m, a basic level of physical fitness is essential.

Age requirement: Minimum 7 years. No upper age limit, but older pilgrims are encouraged to consult their physician and speak with the Divine Kailash team before booking.

Fitness standard: You should be able to walk 5 km continuously on an incline without significant breathlessness. Basic jogging fitness (able to jog 5 km in 40 minutes) is considered adequate preparation.

Health conditions to be aware of:

  • History of cardiac conditions, hypertension, diabetes, or respiratory illness; please consult your doctor and inform Divine Kailash before booking
  • Asthma or history of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) — a medical briefing with our team is mandatory
  • Normal resting blood pressure (Diastolic 75–85, Systolic 100–130 mm Hg) and resting pulse rate (60–100 bpm) are recommended

BMI: A BMI in the normal range (18–29) is recommended. If your BMI falls outside this range, please contact the Divine Kailash team before booking for a personalised assessment.

Preparation tips from Divine Kailash:

  • Begin brisk walking (5–8 km daily) at least 4 weeks before the trip
  • Include stair climbing and light cardiovascular exercise in your routine
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 2 weeks prior to the yatra
  • Stay well-hydrated throughout the journey and at altitude

Adi Kailash Yatra — Important Travel Notes

  • Keep both original and photocopy of your government-issued photo ID proof (Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID); needed for Inner Line Permits
  • Carry adequate warm clothing even in May and June. Temperatures at Jolingkong (4,420 m) drop sharply after sunset
  • Altitude sickness (AMS) can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness. Report any symptoms (persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, or breathlessness) immediately to the Divine Kailash trek leader
  • Do not push through discomfort at altitude; descent is always the safest response
  • The roads beyond Dharchula are narrow mountain roads subject to landslides. Always follow the guidance of the Divine Kailash team and vehicle drivers
  • Photography restrictions apply near the Indo-Tibet border. Follow instructions from your guide and local security personnel
  • Carry personal medications as advised by your doctor
  • Plastic and non-biodegradable waste is prohibited in the entire area. Divine Kailash follows a strict Leave No Trace policy
  • Mobile network is available in patches. BSNL has the best coverage in remote areas; other networks may not function beyond Dharchula

Adi Kailash Temple

The Adi Kailash temple, the small Shiv-Parvati Temple at Jolingkong meadow, is the principal shrine of this entire pilgrimage. Situated at the foot of the Adi Kailash peak, directly in its shadow, this simple stone temple is where pilgrims perform puja, offer bel patra and dhatura to Lord Shiva, chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and the Om Namah Shivaya, and sit in silent prayer before the great sacred mountain.

The Adi Kailash temple in Uttarakhand does not have the architectural grandeur of the famous temple complexes in the plains. Its power lies entirely in its location, at over 4,400 m, in one of the most remote and sacred landscapes in the country, with the towering form of Adi Kailash rising directly behind it. For any devoted Shiv bhakta, standing in front of this shrine is a moment that words cannot fully convey.

Divine Kailash ensures every pilgrim has adequate time at the Adi Kailash temple for personal prayers, rituals, and quiet contemplation before beginning the return journey.
